Peat

Stewards of an important resource

Peat is a valuable ingredient in soil and potting mixes that gardeners appreciate for its contribution to soil consistency and moisture retention. We understand concerns surrounding peat as a valuable, yet limited, natural resource and the potential environmental impact of certain removal practices. We're addressing these concerns through product innovation and a strong emphasis on certified responsible sourcing.

Reducing peat content

We are reducing peat content in our U.S. products and limiting its use to only those products in which it is a necessary ingredient for performance, primarily soils and potting mixes. Since 2019, we have reduced peat in Miracle-Gro Garden Soil by 52 percent and Miracle-Gro Potting Mix by over 29 percent. Miracle-Gro Organic products are peat free and made with upcycled green waste.

Seeking peat alternatives

We continually seek sustainable peat alternatives for our substrates, experimenting with materials such as wood fiber, rice hulls, sugar cane bagasse and composted dairy fiber. While many alternatives do not yet match peat's water retention and soil improvement benefits, and some present challenges related to increased water needs or contamination risks, we are dedicated to innovating our growing media to mitigate the environmental impact of available ingredients while ensuring products remain highly effective for plant nutrition.

Preserving and restoring ecosystems

The sphagnum peat used in our products is certified according to the Veriflora® Responsibly Managed Peatlands standard. This certification provides consumers with confidence that our peat has been produced using best practices and management processes aimed at significantly reducing environmental impacts, demonstrating our commitment to the preservation and restoration of these vital ecosystems. It also ensures the well-being of workers and neighboring communities.
