Where to Use: This seed is perfect for starting a new lawn from scratch or for thickening up an existing one, especially if your lawn has a mix of sunny and shady areas.

How to Use: Use it to start a brand-new lawn or to thicken up the one you've already got.

When to Use: The best time to plant is in the spring or fall when temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 80°F.

How Often to Use: For best results, overseed your lawn with this product once a year to keep it thick and healthy.

For a New Lawn:

  1. Get the Ground Ready: Grab a rake and loosen up the top couple of inches of soil, clearing out any rocks or dead grass.
  2. Spread the Seed: Pour the product into your Scotts spreader, dial in the "New Lawn" setting, and apply it evenly.
  3. Gently Tuck it In: Lightly rake the seed into the top layer of soil. You just want it barely covered.
  4. Give it a Drink: This part is key. Water daily (or as needed) to keep the soil moist until the new grass is at least 2 inches tall.

For Overseeding:

  1. Get Your Lawn Ready: Mow your lawn nice and short (about 2 inches). Then, give it a good rake to loosen the soil and clear out any dead stuff.
  2. Time to Spread: Fill up your spreader, set it to the "Overseeding" setting, and walk at a steady pace to get even coverage.
  3. Just Add Water: Water every day, or as needed, to keep the soil damp until the new seedlings are at least 2 inches tall.

New Lawn:

  • Scotts Broadcast/Rotary Spreaders: 10 1/2
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (3 passes)
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 17 1/2 (4 passes)
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 5 3/4 (2 passes)
  • Scotts Elite Spreader: 8 1/2

Overseeding:

  • Scotts Broadcast/Rotary Spreaders: 5
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 14 1/2 (2 passes)
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 4 3/4
  • Scotts Elite Spreader: 5 1/4

You'll want to water the newly seeded area every day for at least three weeks to keep the soil surface moist. This is the most important step for success. An automatic timer can be a real game-changer here, making sure you don't miss a watering.

  • Let it Grow: We know you're eager to mow, but let the new grass grow until it's at least 2 inches tall before its first trim.
  • Keep it Fed: To keep that awesome new lawn looking its best, give it a good meal every 8 weeks with a Scotts Lawn Food product
  • A Note on the Seed: We've treated the seed with a fungicide to protect it from disease. Because of this, it's not meant for food, feed, or oil.
  • Store it Smart: Keep any leftovers in the original bag and store it somewhere cool and dry, away from kids and pets.
  • Keep it Tidy: If any product ends up on your driveway or sidewalk, just sweep it back onto the lawn. This helps keep our local waterways clean

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These products are Excellent! Fantastic Results! Last fall, we resurfaced our entire front lawn first by using Round up to kill everything & removed debris & dead roots with sharp thatch rake, scraping/regrading low areas, seeded, and fertilized with Scotts Triple Action. (The lawn was mostly weeds & dead grass from drought) . The grass came in beautifully, as weeds were effectively controlled weeds (some crabgrass was stubborn). This spring, we used this fertilizer first as a preventative before temperatures were suitable for seeding. A few weeks later, after removing large dying weeds, too big to leave in, we applied the 3-in-One fertilizer a SECOND time and over-seeded with the Scott’s special PA State Blend covering any bare patches. Watering daily, along with some April showers, the grass has never looked better! The best part? The grass is green on OUR side!😆☺️ I love that this fertilizer is safe for seeding AND does a great job killing those pesky weeds, ESPECIALLY nutsedge, which is very difficult to eradicate. Thank you, Scotts! Tip: If directions are followed carefully, the outcome is well worth the effort!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smartest Decision for my yard every I decided to save money and stop paying fertilizer companies to do a nominal job of caring for my yard. I am so glad I switched. I am saving money and my lawn is looking amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful backyard - waiting patiently for front Mid summer I planted a new lawn in back of house and it came in thick and lush with no problems in about 10-15 days. Early fall I planted the front area and I’m still waiting for one blade! I followed the same procedure I used on back. The only difference was newly purchased bags of seed. Is it possible the seed was compromised? I am using sun & shade.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slow germination and excellent appearance This seed is slow to germinate. It is not an instant impact contractor's mix. You have to make sure your seed bed is properly prepped and you must keep the ground moist every day. Once established, it blows away contractor mixes in appearance. It has a vibrant dark green color and over time it will grow into a lush lawn with proper care. Good things come to those who are patient and willing to wait.
