Pesticides and herbicides

Beneficial tools for health and peace of mind

Given a choice, most consumers would not want to use pesticides or herbicides. But the reality is they are necessary tools to protect families, pets, homes and plants from the dangers and damage that can result from pest infestations and invasive plant species.

Real threats

Pests, overgrown weeds and plant diseases can cause health risks by exposing people to West Nile Virus, Lyme and other conditions, such as asthma and allergies. Property damage can result from infestations, potentially reducing property values.

Effective, safe solutions

We are committed to providing pest and weed control products that are effective and safe when used as directed. Our approach is centered on ingredient selection and product design, clear product labeling and consumer education, and support for a scientific-based regulatory system.

Ingredient selection and product design

We rely on rigorous science to evaluate pesticide or herbicide products or in developing new ones. This enables us to create products that reduce the amount of active ingredients while maintaining effectiveness and meeting or exceeding regulatory safety standards. In selecting ingredients, we consider:

  • Efficacy
  • Safety to humans and animals
  • Impact on the environment
  • Interaction with other ingredients
  • Interaction with the product packaging
  • Use of the lowest active ingredient rate necessary for product effectiveness

In designing products, we strive to make it easier to apply the right amount of product in the right locations. This is accomplished through:

  • Ready-to-use formulations that require no mixing to reduce unnecessary human contact and over application.
  • Handheld wands with precision sprayers to apply liquids directly to the target, minimizing accidental product drift.
  • Precision spreaders to help prevent granules from falling onto sidewalks and driveways.

Product labeling and education

Individual product labels are critical sources for proper product use. They provide clear directions for safe and effective use along with precautionary and first-aid information. Our efforts to educate consumers extends far beyond the label. We rely on marketing materials, advertising, websites and more to educate people on how best to use, properly dispose of or recycle our products. We provide transparent lists of ingredients, step-by-step instructions for maximum benefits and minimal risk.

Policy and regulation

We advocate for scientifically-backed policies and regulations governing pest and herbicide control along with proper staffing and funding for those agencies to work as efficiently as possible.

Pesticides distributed in the United States are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Government scientists require over 100 different tests and studies to ensure the product does not harm people or the environment when used according to the label. As part of this process, we submit efficacy data, formula information and product labels.

After federal approval, we seek approval from every state in which the product will be sold. Our internal standard for state registration is based on those states with the strictest requirements - so our products often exceed the requirements of some regulatory agencies. This process is designed to protect consumers and, we believe, has been successful.

Our Pollinator Promise

Bees and butterflies are critical to healthy and diverse ecosystems. Their populations are in decline, and we’re actively supporting and protecting pollinators and their habitats through our Pollinator Promise.
