Where to Use: This drought-tolerant grass seed mix is formulated for northern lawns. Use it to start a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn.

Where Not to Use: Apply this product only to your lawn. Do not apply near water, storm drains, or drainage ditches.

When to Use: Tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass are cool-season grasses that should be planted in spring or fall, when daily average soil temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 75°F, or air temperatures are between 65°F and 85°F. Do not apply if heavy rain is expected.

Seeding Projects: Use this grass seed mix to start a new lawn, renovate an old lawn, or overseed an existing Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue lawn.

New Lawn

  1. Prep: Rake the area to loosen the top layer of soil (about 2 inches deep) and remove any dead grass or debris so the seed makes good contact with the soil.
  2. Apply: Use a Scotts spreader set to the New Lawn setting, fill the spreader hopper with seed, and apply to the prepped area.
  3. Rake: Lightly rake the seed into the soil so it’s covered just beneath the surface.
  4. Water: Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist, and keep it up for at least 3 weeks or until seedlings reach 2 inches tall.

Overseeding

  1. Mow: Mow your lawn at the lowest setting (about 2 inches) and bag the clippings.
  2. Rake: Rake to remove debris and dead grass and loosen the soil so the seed makes good contact with the soil.
  3. Apply: Use a Scotts spreader set to the Overseeding setting, fill the spreader hopper with seed, and apply to the lawn.
  4. Rake: Lightly rake the seed into the soil so it’s covered just beneath the surface.
  5. Water: Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist, and keep it up for at least 3 weeks or until seedlings reach 2 inches tall.

  • Give the Mower a Break: Let the new grass grow until it’s at least 2 inches tall before you mow it for the first time.
  • Fresh Is Best: Always use fresh product. After opening, plant within the season.

Water is key to seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist, and continue this frequent watering for at least 3 weeks or until seedlings reach 2 inches tall. Auto-timers or other reminders help make sure no essential waterings are missed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix drought resistant?

No grass seed is truly drought resistant, but Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix is developed to be drought tolerant. The mix’s tall fescue grows long roots to access water deep in the soil, and those deep roots help conserve water. The Kentucky bluegrass in the mix will naturally spread to fill in bare areas after dry spells. In a long, severe dry spell, any lawn can go dormant, but drought-tolerant grasses hold on longer and recover better when water returns.

Once established, lawns grown from Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix typically need less frequent watering than standard grass seed, thanks to deep-rooting tall fescue that is bred to access moisture other grasses can’t reach. New seed still needs daily watering for at least 3 weeks or until seedlings reach 2 inches, just like any grass seed.

Yes. The Kentucky bluegrass in Scotts Drought Tolerant Mix has rhizomes, underground stems that let it naturally spread to fill in bare areas. So if the kids or the dog rough up a spot, the grass works to fill it back in.

Yes. Scotts Drought Tolerant Mix grass seed can be used to start a new lawn or overseed an existing one. It’s the best fit for lawns that are straight Kentucky bluegrass or already contain tall fescue, since adding coarser tall fescue to a fine-bladed lawn can leave it looking patchy. If you want to switch your whole lawn to a more drought-tolerant grass, start fresh following the New Lawn directions.

Plant Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix in spring or fall, when daily average soil temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 75°F, or air temperatures are between 65°F and 85°F. Avoid applying it when heavy rain is expected.

Measure your lawn first, then pick the bag of Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix lawn seed that meets your lawn size and seeding project.

  • A 4 lb. bag covers 665 sq. ft. for a new lawn or 2,000 sq. ft. when overseeding.
  • A 10 lb. bag covers 1,665 sq. ft. for a new lawn or 5,000 sq. ft. when overseeding.

Water daily, or as needed, to keep the soil surface moist. Keep watering your Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix this way for at least 3 weeks or until seedlings reach 2 inches tall. Auto-timers can help make sure you don’t miss a watering.

For best results, yes. Use Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Food to feed and strengthen the lawn you grow with Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix. Feeding builds strong roots and improves your lawn’s ability to absorb water and nutrients versus an unfed lawn. Once your new lawn is established, start a regular feeding routine every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season.

Keep leftover Scotts Drought Tolerant Mix grass seed in the original packaging and store it in a cool, dry place like the garage or shed, safely away from kids and pets. For best results, use the remaining grass seed within the season after opening.

With proper watering, Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix typically germinates in about 6 to 10 days, and you’ll have a more established lawn in a few weeks.
