Where to Use: Ideal for sunny spots where you want a tough, low-maintenance yard.

How to Use: Use it to plant a new buffalograss yard or to thicken up an existing one. Important: This grass is a legend on its own—do not mix it with other grass types.

When to Use: Plant in late spring or early summer, after the daily air temperature stays around 70°F for two solid weeks.

How Often to Use: Just once is all it takes to get things going.

For Planting a New Yard:

  1. GET READY: Rake the area to loosen the top 2 inches of soil and get rid of any dead grass or debris. You want to give the seeds a clean slate.
  2. APPLY: Get your Scotts spreader, set it to the ""New Green Space"" setting from the chart, and apply evenly.
  3. RAKE (GENTLY): Lightly rake the seed into the soil. Just enough to get it covered so it can make good contact with the earth.
  4. WATER: Water daily to keep the soil surface moist. Keep this up for two weeks after the sprouts appear.

For Overseeding an Existing Buffalograss Yard:

  1. GET READY: Mow your existing Buffalograss yard on the lowest setting and bag the clippings. Rake to clear out any debris and loosen the soil.
  2. APPLY: Fill your spreader, use the ""Overseeding"" setting, and walk your yard to apply the seed mix evenly.
  3. RAKE (GENTLY): Lightly rake the seed into the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
  4. WATER: Water daily to keep the top layer of soil moist. Continue this routine for two full weeks after you see the new sprouts pop up.

For Growing a New Green Space:

  • Scotts Broadcast / Rotary Spreaders: 10
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 17 (4 passes)
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 6 1/2 (2 passes)
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (4 passes)

For Overseeding an Existing Green Space:

  • Scotts Broadcast / Rotary Spreaders: 6 1/2
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 17 (2 passes)
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 6 1/2
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (2 passes)

Your new seed is thirsty. For the first few weeks, the goal is to keep the soil surface consistently moist, but not soaking wet. Water lightly every day. After you see the sprouts, keep that daily watering routine going for another two weeks to make sure they get a strong start.

  • The Waiting Game: Buffalograss takes its time, so be patient. You can expect to see sprouts in 14-30 days.
  • A Clean Slate: We can't say it enough—this grass is a solo artist. Do not mix it with other grass types like fescue or bluegrass for the best results.
  • Ready for Play (Eventually): The good news is this product is safe for use around people and pets. Just use it as directed—that means don't eat it, drink it, or rub it in your eyes... you get the point. However, your new seedlings are delicate! While it’s safe for you and your family to be on the yard, heavy traffic can crush seedlings before they can take root. Please tread lightly until the seedlings are established.
  • Gear Up: Even though we use only the good stuff, it's always smart to use common sense. We recommend wearing gloves and closed-toe shoes. Save the flip-flops for when you're admiring your handiwork.
  • Wash Up: Make sure to wash your hands after you're done. It's a good rule of thumb for any yard work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store leftover product?

Just find a cool, dry place. Roll the top of the bag down to keep it sealed, and it'll be good to go for next time.

It’s the OG low-maintenance yard. Because it’s a North American native, it’s naturally adapted to thrive in tough conditions with less water and attention once it’s established.

Nope. Buffalograss is a different kind of grass that does best when it has its own space to establish. It’s best to plant it in a dedicated area.

Absolutely. Just follow the directions, and it's safe for the whole crew—four-legged members included—to be on the yard right after you've applied it. However, too much traffic can crush young seedlings before they can take root. So, it's best to tread lightly until your yard is established.
