Where to Use: This seed is perfect for starting a new lawn from scratch or for thickening up an existing one. It grows best in areas that get a good amount of sun.

How to Use: Use it to start a brand-new lawn or to overseed the one you've already got.

When to Use: The best time to plant is in the spring or fall when temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 80°F.

How Often to Use: For best results, overseed your lawn with this product once a year to keep it thick and healthy.

For a New Lawn:

  1. Get the Ground Ready: Grab a rake and loosen up the top couple of inches of soil, clearing out any rocks or dead grass.
  2. Spread the Seed: Pour the product into your Scotts spreader, dial in the ""New Lawn"" setting, and apply it evenly.
  3. Gently Tuck it In: Lightly rake the seed into the top layer of soil. You just want it barely covered.
  4. Give it a Drink: This part is key. Water daily (or as needed) to keep the soil moist until the new grass is at least 2 inches tall.

For Overseeding:

  1. Get Your Lawn Ready: Mow your lawn nice and short (about 2 inches). Then, give it a good rake to loosen the soil and clear out any dead stuff.
  2. Time to Spread: Fill up your spreader, set it to the ""Overseeding"" setting, and walk at a steady pace to get even coverage.
  3. Just Add Water: Water every day, or as needed, to keep the soil damp until the new seedlings are at least 2 inches tall.

New Lawn:

  • Scotts Broadcast/Rotary Spreaders: 6 ½
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (2 passes)
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 16
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 5
  • Scotts Elite Spreader: 5 ½

Overseeding:

  • Scotts Broadcast/Rotary Spreaders: 3
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 4
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 9 ½
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 3 ¾
  • Scotts Elite Spreader: 3 ½

You'll want to water the newly seeded area every day for at least three weeks to keep the soil surface moist. This is the most important step for success. An automatic timer can be a real game-changer here, making sure you don't miss a watering.

  • Let it Grow: We know you're eager to mow, but let the new grass grow until it's at least 2 inches tall before its first trim.
  • Keep it Fed: To keep that awesome new lawn looking its best, give it a good meal every 8 weeks with a Scotts Lawn Food product.
  • A Note on the Seed: We've treated the seed with a fungicide to protect it from disease. Because of this, it's not meant for food, feed, or oil.
  • Store it Smart: Keep any leftovers in the original bag and store it somewhere cool and dry, away from kids and pets.
  • Keep it Tidy: If any product ends up on your driveway or sidewalk, just sweep it back onto the lawn. This helps keep our local waterways clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store leftover product?

Got some left over? No sweat. Just keep it in the original bag and store it in a cool, dry place like the garage or shed, safely away from kids and pets.

It's the go-to for a classic, beautiful lawn. It grows a really dense, dark green turf, and it's tough enough to stand up to everyday wear and tear.

Kentucky bluegrass takes a little longer to get going, so be patient. With proper watering, you should start to see the first green sprouts in about 14-21 days.

This mix really loves the sun. If you have a lawn with a lot of shady spots, you'll get better results with our Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Grass Bought and seeded this grass on September 19th, 2020. It was a little slow to start, but boy did it grow well! I used starter fertilizer and watered 5 times a day for 5-10 minutes depending on the section until October 7th because my irrigation water was shut off. After that, I watered once a day with a movable sprinkler for another week and a half. Would buy this grass again. Last pictures are from today, October 30th, 2020.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Grass Seed I normall do not write reviews, but I feel I needed to with this success I have with these seeds. The norm for KBG germination is between 14-30. With the right prep work and I was able to get these seeds to germinate in 6 days. I just did a compete renovation of my front and back lawn 3 weeks ago covering 7500sqft and I would definitely use these seeds and recommend them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid grass This seed is slow to germinate, but WILL germinate when given proper conditions. Soil temperature needs to be between 50 and 65 for best results with frequent watering. This is a hardy grass. I planted in late March in Illinois And it germinated and two days later, survived 5 consecutive nights in the 20’s and 6 inches of snow. Then it started growing again as temperatures rebounded. It is very very slow to establish but with proper care it will fill in to form a very thick lawn. I’ve been mowing at less than an inch and it has handled that cut just fine. It does seem susceptible to leaf spot when cut that low, however a simple fungicide program ( Scott’s Disease Ex ) when symptoms first show up fixes the problem with in days. It seems very drought resistant. The picture of this grass is with little irrigation. About 2” of rain over a 28 day period and full sun. In late afternoon or early morning When the sun is low, the light produces a nice emerald/blue hue. You really need about a year for this grass to fully establish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome to overseed with. I have been overseeding my entire lawn with this mix for the past few years and WOW what a difference. It's amazing to see that those lush thick blue green blades of grass come up every year. Bluegrass really is the ultimate "green" grass in my opinion. One down side of Kentucky Bluegrass is that in the spring time it does take longer to "green up" then other types of grass but as long as you use it with a MIX of other grasses then there should be no problems ever! I will continue to overseed with this mix every year to strengthen my lawn.
