Where & When To Use
Where to Use: The Scotts Whirl Hand-Powered Spreader is perfect for small lawns.
When to Use: This hand-crank spreader is great for year-round use. Use it to apply lawn fertilizer or grass seed; in the winter, use it to apply ice melt or salt to driveways and sidewalks.
How To Use
- PREP: First, check the back of your Scotts product bag for the correct spreader setting.
- FILL: We recommend filling the spreader over your driveway, not the lawn. That way, you can easily sweep up any spills.
- SET: Turn the orange dial to the setting you just found on the product bag.
- GO: Start walking at a steady pace, pull the trigger, and turn the crank. For the best results, try to keep a consistent rhythm with both your walking and cranking.
Product Safety
- Make sure you're wearing closed-toe shoes when using your spreader.
- We recommend wearing gloves when handling lawn care products.
- Keep the spreader and all lawn care products out of reach of children and pets.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the hopper capacity of the Scotts Whirl spreader?
A full hopper holds enough product to cover up to 1,500 sq. ft., which is right-sized for a small lawn.
What types of lawn care products can I apply with the Whirl?
The Whirl is built for straightforward jobs like feeding and seeding, plus melting ice in the winter. For combo products that also tackle weeds or insects, a non-hand-crank broadcast spreader will get you better results.
Can I use the Scotts Whirl year-round?
Absolutely. That's exactly what it's designed for. Feed and seed your lawn through the growing season, then switch to ice melt duty in the winter.
How do I clean my Whirl Spreader?
It's simple. Just empty any leftover product back into its bag and rinse out the hopper with a garden hose. Let it air dry, and you're all set for next time.
How do I know what spreader setting to use on my Whirl spreader?
You can find the correct spreader setting on the back of every bag of Scotts product. If there are no spreader settings listed, the product is not intended for use with a hand-crank spreader. If you need help finding your spreader setting, use the Scotts Spreader Settings Lookup Tool.
Does the Scotts Whirl come with a warranty?
While the Whirl doesn't have a mechanical warranty, it is backed by ScottsMiracle-Gro No-Quibble Monday Back Guarantee. If you're not satisfied, you can request a refund of your purchase price within one year of purchase.

Whirl feels better at first spin
The previous handheld spreader (not a Scotts} lasted one application before seizing up. The Scott's Whirl turns better, spins much smoother and makes quick work out of spreading fertilizer and pest prevention consistently over my 5000 sq. Ft. of yards.

Love My New Spreader!
The Scotts® Whirl™ Hand-Powered Spreader features an adjustable forearm support. This support spreads the weight out which eases the pressure on your wrist. Using the Scotts® Whirl™ is so comfortable! It is a nice upgrade from my old Scotts spreader that I've used for years.

Easy and effective
Perfectly easy to use and does a great job on a small yard. The spreader itself is light weight and the pull out arm rest really makes it easy to hold up with one hand for an extended period of time.
