Water

Responsible use and conservation

We’re committed to being water stewards, and that includes taking steps to help protect the quality of water resources and conserve water at home and in communities. This comes to life in our approach to water use within our operations and our consumer products.

Water-wise solutions for consumers

Our lawn and garden solutions help consumers conserve water and protect water quality by minimizing nutrient runoff risks. Fertilizer runoff, which primarily occurs from agricultural operations, can contribute to algal blooms that impact ecosystems. Examples of our water-wise approach:

  • Lawn spreader designs that minimize fertilizer overuse and help prevent runoff
  • Fertilizer reformulations that removed phosphorus and increased slow-release nitrogen to help protect sensitive ecosystems
  • Long-rooted clover and drought-tolerant grasses that require less water maintenance
  • Moisture-control potting mixes that prevent overwatering and underwatering

Water management in our operations

We continually explore ways to consume less water and reduce wastewater. This extends from our manufacturing plants to our research and development operations. At our two highest water-use plants, we reclaim wastewater and reintroduce it into the manufacturing process to reduce purchased water volumes and associated wastewater. Innovative watering techniques have reduced water consumption in our greenhouses.

Environmental partnerships

We partner with leading environmental organizations to drive scientific innovation, protect waterways and advocate for the right to safe and accessible water. The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation financially supports many of these initiatives through the National Partner Network, a group of environmental organizations that we brought together to tackle a range of environmental challenges, from water stewardship and pollinator advocacy to the development of more community green spaces.

National Partner Network

Our company and foundation have built a National Partner Network (NPN) of experts and environmental organizations committed to protecting our waterways, green spaces and pollinator habitats.
