About This Product
Meet the Scotts Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader, built to do one job well: get product down accurately, every pass. Its heavy-duty frame keeps things steady while you walk, and the 22-inch spread pattern lays down consistent, edge-to-edge coverage. The hopper holds up to 10,000 sq. ft. of Scotts Turf Builder product, so you can cover a good stretch of lawn before refilling. Setup is simple: raise the handle, hand-tighten the wing nuts, and you’re ready to go. While our spreaders come pre-calibrated from the factory, it’s a good idea to check your calibration before its first use so you know you're putting down the right amount.

When to Use: The Classic Drop Spreader is great for year-round use. Use it to apply lawn fertilizer, grass seed, and granular control products for weeds, bugs, or disease. It can also be used to apply ice melt and screened rock salt to driveways and sidewalks.
How To Use
- ASSEMBLE: Raise the handle and hand-tighten the wing nuts—no tools needed.
- FILL: Load the hopper with your Scotts product.
- SET: Turn the rate control to the setting listed on the back of your product bag under “Scotts Drop Spreaders.”
- GO: Start walking, then squeeze and hold the trigger to apply. Overlap each pass slightly, and line up the arrows on the hopper with your wheel track from the previous row.
CHECK YOUR CALIBRATION BEFORE YOUR FIRST PASS
- Turn the micrometer until “8” is centered in the window.
- Stand the spreader on its handle, logo facing away from you; press gently with your foot on the control lever and check the shutoff bar's position.
- With your foot on the control lever, the raised pointer on the shutoff bar (bottom of the hopper) should line up with the calibration line.
- If the shutoff bar covers the line, turn the adjustment screw counter-clockwise; if it's below the line, turn it clockwise.
Product Tips
Apply a header strip—a border pass—around the perimeter of your yard first. It gives you a clean edge to spread into on your main passes.
Product Safety
- Make sure you're wearing closed-toe shoes when using your spreader.
- We recommend wearing gloves when handling lawn care products.
- Keep the spreader and all lawn care products out of reach of children and pets.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the spread pattern of the Classic Drop Spreader?
The Classic Drop Spreader has a 22-inch spread pattern, giving you accurate, consistent coverage in every pass across your lawn.
Why doesn't the Classic Drop Spreader need the EdgeGuard?
The EdgeGuard is built for broadcast spreaders, which fling product out in a wide arc; that's what makes edge control necessary especially when applying the perimeter strip. The Classic Drop Spreader works differently: it releases product in a controlled path directly beneath the hopper, between your wheel track. That more contained drop is why it doesn't require EdgeGuard technology.
How much lawn space does the Classic Drop Spreader cover?
The hopper of the Classic Drop Spreader holds enough product to cover up to 10,000 sq. ft.
Does the Classic Drop Spreader include a warranty?
The Classic Drop Spreader doesn't have a mechanical warranty, but it is backed by the ScottsMiracle-Gro No-Quibble Monday Back Guarantee. If you're not satisfied, you can request a refund of your purchase price within one year of purchase.
How do I calibrate the Classic Drop Spreader before use?
An uncalibrated spreader may apply the wrong amount of product. To calibrate your drop spreader, turn the micrometer until “8” is centered in the window, stand the spreader on its handle with the logo facing away from you, and check that the raised pointer on the shutoff bar lines up with the calibration line while your foot holds the control lever down. If the shutoff bar covers the line, turn the adjustment screw counter-clockwise; if it's below the line, turn it clockwise.
How do I know what spreader setting to use on my Classic Drop Spreader?
Just check the back of any Scotts product. You should find the correct setting listed right there. You can also use our Spreader Settings Lookup Tool.
