Where to Use: Great for sunny or partially shaded spots where you want a tough, low-maintenance yard.

How to Use: Perfect for starting a new Sheep Fescue yard from scratch or for thickening up an existing one.

When to Use: Plant in the late spring or early summer, when the average daily air temperature is 60°F for two weeks.

How Often to Use: Just once is all it takes to get things going.

For Planting a New Yard:

  1. GET READY: Rake the area to loosen the top 2 inches of soil. Clear out any debris or dead grass to give your new seed the best start.
  2. APPLY: Load up your Scotts spreader, use the ""New Green Space"" setting from the chart, and apply the seed evenly.
  3. RAKE (GENTLY): Lightly rake the seed into the soil to ensure it makes good contact with the ground.
  4. WATER: Water daily to keep the soil surface moist. Keep it up for at least two weeks, or until your new grass is about 2 inches tall.

For Overseeding an Existing Yard:

  1. GET READY: Mow the existing yard on your mower's lowest setting and bag the clippings. Rake away any debris to expose the soil.
  2. APPLY: Set your spreader to the ""Overseeding"" setting from the chart and make an even pass over your yard.
  3. RAKE (GENTLY): Lightly rake the seed into your existing yard so it settles into the soil.
  4. WATER: Water every day to keep the soil damp until the new grass has reached 2 inches in height (about 3 weeks).

For Growing a New Green Space:

  • Scotts Broadcast / Rotary Spreaders: 14 1/2
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 18 (4 passes)
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (4 passes)
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 6 1/2 (2 passes)

For Overseeding an Existing Green Space:

  • Scotts Broadcast / Rotary Spreaders: 8 1/2
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 18 (2 passes)
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (2 passes)
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 6 1/2

To get things started, your new seed needs consistent moisture. Water lightly every day to keep the soil surface damp, but don't turn it into a swamp. Once the grass sprouts, keep that daily watering going for a few more weeks to build strong roots.

  • The Long Game: Good things take time. You should see sprouts in about 14-21 days, so be patient,
  • Tough Stuff: Once it's established, sheep fescue is a survivor. It's known for its ability to handle drought and stay green when other grasses might give up.
  • Ready for Play (Eventually): The good news is this product is safe for use around people and pets. Just use it as directed—that means don't eat it, drink it, or rub it in your eyes... you get the point. However, your new seedlings are delicate! While it’s safe for you and your family to be on the yard, heavy traffic can crush seedlings before they can take root. Please tread lightly until the seedlings are established.
  • Gear Up: Even though we use only the good stuff, it's always smart to use common sense. We recommend wearing gloves and closed-toe shoes. Save the flip-flops for when you're admiring your handiwork.
  • Wash Up: Make sure to wash your hands after you're done. It's a good rule of thumb for any yard work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store leftover product?

Easy. Just find a cool, dry spot, roll the top of the bag down to keep it sealed, and it'll be ready when you are.

It’s a low-maintenance champion. It's naturally drought-tolerant, so it stays green with less water once it's established, which means less work for you.

It does best in sunny or partially shaded areas. If you've got deep, dark shade, this might not be the best fit.

Absolutely. Just follow the directions, and it's safe for the whole crew—four-legged members included—to be on the yard right after you've applied it. However, too much traffic can crush young seedlings before they can take root. So, it's best to tread lightly until your yard is established.
