Where to Use: This seed is great for starting a new lawn or thickening up an existing one, especially in high-traffic areas.

How to Use: Use it to start a brand-new lawn or to overseed the one you've already got.

When to Use: The best time to plant is in the spring or fall when temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 80°F.

How Often to Use: For best results, overseed your lawn with this product once a year to keep it thick and healthy.

For a New Lawn:

  1. Get the Ground Ready: Grab a rake and loosen up the top couple of inches of soil, clearing out any rocks or dead grass.
  2. Spread the Seed: Pour the product into your Scotts spreader, dial in the ""New Lawn"" setting, and apply it evenly.
  3. Gently Tuck it In: Lightly rake the seed into the top layer of soil. You just want it barely covered.
  4. Give it a Drink: This part is key. Water daily (or as needed) to keep the soil moist until the new grass is at least 2 inches tall.

For Overseeding:

  1. Get Your Lawn Ready: Mow your lawn nice and short (about 2 inches). Then, give it a good rake to loosen the soil and clear out any dead stuff.
  2. Time to Spread: Fill up your spreader, set it to the ""Overseeding"" setting, and walk at a steady pace to get even coverage.
  3. Just Add Water: Water every day, or as needed, to keep the soil damp until the new seedlings are at least 2 inches tall.

New Lawn:

  • Scotts Broadcast/Rotary Spreaders: 13 1/2
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (3 passes)
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 18 (5 passes)
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 6 1/2 (2 passes)
  • Scotts Elite Spreader: 9

Overseeding:

  • Scotts Broadcast/Rotary Spreaders: 5 3/4
  • Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5
  • Scotts Drop Spreaders: 17 (2 passes)
  • Scotts Wizz Spreader: 5 1/4
  • Scotts Elite Spreader: 5 1/4

You'll want to water the newly seeded area every day for at least three weeks to keep the soil surface moist. This is the most important step for success. An automatic timer can be a real game-changer here, making sure you don't miss a watering.

  • Let it Grow: We know you're eager to mow, but let the new grass grow until it's at least 2 inches tall before its first trim.
  • Keep it Fed: To keep that awesome new lawn looking its best, give it a good meal every 8 weeks with a Scotts Lawn Food product.
  • A Note on the Seed: We've treated the seed with a fungicide to protect it from disease. Because of this, it's not meant for food, feed, or oil. Just be sure to store it away from any food.
  • Store it Smart: Keep any leftovers in the original bag and store it somewhere cool and dry, away from kids and pets.
  • Keep it Tidy: If any product ends up on your driveway or sidewalk, just sweep it back onto the lawn. This helps keep our local waterways clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store leftover product?

Got some left over? No sweat. Just keep it in the original bag and store it in a cool, dry place like the garage or shed, safely away from kids and pets.

Perennial ryegrass is one of the fastest-germinating grasses out there. With the right conditions, you can see sprouts in as little as 4-7 days.

While Perennial ryegrass can handle some light shade, it really does its best work in areas that get a good amount of sun. If you have a really shady yard, you might be happier with our Sun & Shade Mix.

This mix is naturally durable and wear-tolerant. It's built to bounce back, so it's a great choice for lawns that see a lot of action from kids, pets, or backyard parties.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Germinated in 4 days Fast germination, will mix well with Kentucky bluegrass since it germinates slow. Perenial Rye Grass since it germinates and grows fast acts as a shade and protection for your slow germinating Kentucky Blue Grass. Great mix. I will buy this again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful results! I have never had much luck growing grass probably due to lack of time to study the issue and ask for advice. Currently I am attempting to do some repair of an earthen dam. Where small stumps have been pulled quick grass growth is necessary to protect against erosion. A local hardware employee suggested using this product based only on the basis that it was a perennial... So I took a chance with it. Minimal effort was used in the planting. I laid down some composted brush humus from the local recycling center (free), broadcast some seed, brushed the surface to cover the seed, and covered overall with a bit of straw. no water was used as it was supposed to rain the next day. (it was actually several days later that we received a little rain.) I could not get back to the dam for several weeks so I planted a small amount of test seed in a small flat using the same technique as at the dam. The only difference was that this time I did water the seed. After about a week I saw that it had sprouted and looked good. Two weeks after planting the grass at the dam I returned to discover that the grass was growing very well. Now a month later it is looking great and is well rooted. I look forward to using this seed again as it really seems to work well!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent mix, as advertised I moved into my house after the time to spring overseed and was greeted with a ton of crabgrass. I tore out most of the crabgrass and with the good temps in my area decided to plant this Ryegrass. It has exceeded my expectations immensely! It germinates quickly and has filled in my lawn beautifully! The dense turf it is forming is already keeping weeds at bay. I plan to do my fall overseeding with this and turf builder Kentucky blue at the suggestion of Scotts. I am confident that it will turn out just as well as my early summer project.
