Where Not to Use: Apply this product only to your lawn. Do not apply near water, storm drains, or drainage ditches. This is treated seed with a fungicide: do not use for food, feed, or oil purposes.

When to Use: Cool-season grasses should be planted in spring or fall, when daily average soil temperatures are consistently between 55°F and 70°F, or air temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F. Do not apply if heavy rain is expected.

Seeding Projects: Use the sun and shade lawn seed to start a new lawn, renovate an old lawn, or overseed to thicken up an existing lawn.

New Lawn

  1. Prep: Rake the area to loosen the top layer of soil (about 2 inches deep) and remove any dead grass or debris so the seed makes good contact with the soil.
  2. Apply: Use a Scotts spreader set to the New Lawn setting, fill the spreader hopper with seed, and apply to the prepped area.
  3. Rake: Lightly rake the seed into the soil so it’s covered just beneath the surface.
  4. Water: Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist, and keep it up for at least 3 weeks or until seedlings reach 2 inches tall.

Overseeding

  1. Mow: Mow your lawn at the lowest setting (about 2 inches) and bag the clippings.
  2. Rake: Rake to remove debris and dead grass and loosen the soil so the seed makes good contact with the soil.
  3. Apply: Use a Scotts spreader set to the Overseeding setting, fill the spreader hopper with seed, and apply to the prepped area.
  4. Rake: Lightly rake the seed into the soil so it’s covered just beneath the surface.
  5. Water: Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist, and keep it up for at least 3 weeks or until seedlings reach 2 inches tall.

  • Fresh Is Best: For best results, always use fresh product. After opening, plant within the season.

Water is key to seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist, and continue this frequent watering for at least 3 weeks or until seedlings reach 2 inches tall. Auto-timers or other reminders help make sure no essential waterings are missed.

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • This seed has been treated with mefenoxam, a fungicide that helps protect grass seedlings from damping-off, a harmful disease caused by the water molds Pythium and Phytophthora. The frequent waterings and damp soil conditions that new seedlings need also encourages water mold development. The fungicide coating helps improve seedling survival.
  • Do not use for food, feed, or oil purposes. Store away from feeds and foodstuffs.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, out of reach of children. After opening, plant within the season.
  • Do not apply near water, storm drains, or drainage ditches, and do not apply if heavy rain is expected.
  • Apply only to your lawn. Sweep any product that lands on your driveway, sidewalk, or street back onto your lawn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix treated with a fungicide?

Yes. Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix is treated with mefenoxam, a fungicide that helps protect seedlings from damping-off, a disease caused by the soil-borne water molds Pythium and Phytophthora. New seed needs frequent watering and damp soil, which are the same conditions these organisms love, so the treatment helps improve overall germination and seedling survival. Because it’s treated seed, don’t use it for food, feed, or oil purposes, and keep it out of reach of children.

Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix is designed to grow a thick lawn that thrives in a variety of light conditions from full sun to dense shade. The lawn seed mix has a rating of 5 out of 5 for sun tolerance and 4 out of 5 for shade tolerance.

Yes. Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Grass Seed Mix includes Kentucky bluegrass and creeping red fescue (a type of fine fescue) that naturally spread to thicken thin areas and fill in bare spots over time.

Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix is built to stand up to stresses like drought, foot traffic, and wear and tear from kids and pets. It’s rated 3 out of 5 (moderate tolerance) for drought and 4 out of 5 for durability.

Root-Building Nutrition is the combination of seed, fertilizer, and soil improver in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix. Our turfgrass scientists crafted it to help establish deep roots that grow thick, green turf, so, with proper care, you can build a better, stronger lawn from the roots up.

With proper watering, Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix typically starts to germinate in about 6 to 12 days. Some grass types will germinate faster than others. Give it a few weeks, and your lawn will really start to fill in.

Plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix in spring or fall, when daily average soil temperatures are consistently between 55°F and 70°F, or air temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F. Avoid applying it when heavy rain is expected.

It depends on your seeding project. Measure your lawn, then select the bag of Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix that meets your lawn size and project type.

  • A 2.4 lb. bag covers 320 sq. ft. for a new lawn or 960 sq. ft. when overseeding.
  • A 5.6 lb. bag covers 745 sq. ft. for a new lawn or 2,240 sq. ft. when overseeding.
  • A 16 lb. bag covers 2,130 sq. ft. for a new lawn or 6,400 sq. ft. when overseeding.
  • A 32 lb. bag covers 4,265 sq. ft. for a new lawn or 12,800 sq. ft. when overseeding.

Water daily, or as needed, to keep the soil surface moist. Keep watering your Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix this way for at least 3 weeks or until seedlings reach 2 inches tall. Auto-timers can help make sure you don’t miss a watering.

Keep leftover Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix in the original packaging and store it in a cool, dry place like the garage or shed, safely away from kids and pets and away from animal feed and other food sources, since it’s treated seed. For best results, use the remaining grass seed within the season after opening.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These products are Excellent! Fantastic Results! Last fall, we resurfaced our entire front lawn first by using Round up to kill everything & removed debris & dead roots with sharp thatch rake, scraping/regrading low areas, seeded, and fertilized with Scotts Triple Action. (The lawn was mostly weeds & dead grass from drought) . The grass came in beautifully, as weeds were effectively controlled weeds (some crabgrass was stubborn). This spring, we used this fertilizer first as a preventative before temperatures were suitable for seeding. A few weeks later, after removing large dying weeds, too big to leave in, we applied the 3-in-One fertilizer a SECOND time and over-seeded with the Scott’s special PA State Blend covering any bare patches. Watering daily, along with some April showers, the grass has never looked better! The best part? The grass is green on OUR side!😆☺️ I love that this fertilizer is safe for seeding AND does a great job killing those pesky weeds, ESPECIALLY nutsedge, which is very difficult to eradicate. Thank you, Scotts! Tip: If directions are followed carefully, the outcome is well worth the effort!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smartest Decision for my yard every I decided to save money and stop paying fertilizer companies to do a nominal job of caring for my yard. I am so glad I switched. I am saving money and my lawn is looking amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful backyard - waiting patiently for front Mid summer I planted a new lawn in back of house and it came in thick and lush with no problems in about 10-15 days. Early fall I planted the front area and I’m still waiting for one blade! I followed the same procedure I used on back. The only difference was newly purchased bags of seed. Is it possible the seed was compromised? I am using sun & shade.
