Where to Use: This seed is perfect for starting a new lawn from scratch or for thickening up an existing one. It's a great choice for lawns that need to be tough and low-maintenance.

How to Use: Use it to start a brand-new lawn or to thicken up the one you've already got.

When to Use: The best time to plant is in the spring or fall when temperatures are consistently between 65°F and 85°F.

How Often to Use: For best results, overseed your lawn with this product once a year to keep it thick and healthy.

For a New Lawn:

  1. Get the Ground Ready: Grab a rake and loosen up the top couple of inches of soil, clearing out any rocks or dead grass.
  2. Spread the Seed: Pour the product into your Scotts spreader, dial in the ""New Lawn"" setting, and apply it evenly.
  3. Gently Tuck it In: Lightly rake the seed into the top layer of soil. You just want it barely covered.
  4. Give it a Drink: This part is key. Water daily (or as needed) to keep the soil moist until the new grass is at least 2 inches tall.

For Overseeding:

  1. Get Your Lawn Ready: Mow your lawn nice and short (about 2 inches). Then, give it a good rake to loosen the soil and clear out any dead stuff.
  2. Time to Spread: Fill up your spreader, set it to the ""Overseeding"" setting, and walk at a steady pace to get even coverage.
  3. Just Add Water: Water every day, or as needed, to keep the soil damp until the new seedlings are at least 2 inches tall.

New Lawn:

Scotts Broadcast/Rotary Spreaders: 9 1/2 (2 passes)

Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (5 passes)

Scotts Drop Spreaders: 18 (5 passes)

Scotts Wizz Spreader: 6 (3 passes)

Scotts Elite Spreader: 11 1/2

Overseeding:

Scotts Broadcast/Rotary Spreaders: 8

Scotts Hand-Held Spreaders: 5 (2 passes)

Scotts Drop Spreaders: 17 1/2 (2 passes)

Scotts Wizz Spreader: 6

Scotts Elite Spreader: 7"

You'll want to water the newly seeded area every day for at least three weeks to keep the soil surface moist. This is the most important step for success. An automatic timer can be a real game-changer here, making sure you don't miss a watering.

  • Let it Grow: We know you're eager to mow, but let the new grass grow until it's at least 2 inches tall before its first trim.
  • Keep it Fed: To keep that awesome new lawn looking its best, give it a good meal every 8 weeks with a Scotts Lawn Food product.
  • A Note on the Seed: We've treated the seed with a fungicide to protect it from disease. Because of this, it's not meant for food, feed, or oil. Just be sure to store it away from any food.
  • Store it Smart: Keep any leftovers in the original bag and store it somewhere cool and dry, away from kids and pets.
  • Keep it Tidy: If any product ends up on your driveway or sidewalk, just sweep it back onto the lawn. This helps keep our local waterways clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store leftover product?

Got some left over? No sweat. Just keep it in the original bag and store it in a cool, dry place like the garage or shed, safely away from kids and pets.

It's all about the roots. Tall fescue is known for growing deep roots, which helps it find water during dry spells and stand up to heat and foot traffic. It's a real survivor.

While our Tall fescue mix can handle some shade, it's happiest in areas that get a good amount of sun. If you have a lawn with a lot of dense shade, our Sun & Shade Mix is probably your best bet.

With proper watering and the right temperatures, you should start to see the first green sprouts in about 6-10 days. Give it a few weeks, and your lawn will really start to fill in and get established.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thick Green Grass Finally the grass seeds have germinated. What a look! I have thick lush green grass from these seeds. It took some time for all of the seeds to germinate because I have lots of trees in my yard. It tends to hold water when it rains and I water on a regular basis. However, I believe keeping the seeds moist, as directed on the bag, is key to the results I have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grew fast and tall I used the tall fescue in a small area of my yard that i had done a repair in. I used the seed on a Sunday and by the following week I already was getting small sprouts. In 4 weeks i reseeded and now its been 7 weeks and you can barely tell work had been done in that spot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ‘Go To’ for all Lawn Repairs We aerated / seeded the last week in August. Three weeks later and after the first mow, a few patchy areas near edging, pavers and where dogs may do their business were spot seeds using my two “go to” repair products; Scotts tall fescue grass seed and Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil. Ten days or so later, we have an inch or more growth in all areas spot treated. These two products take the worry out of lawn repair needs and highly recommend for spot seeding after fall aeration/seeding and in the spring to spot repair if needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great seed will keep using it This is the second bag of this grass seed that I got, and it's working just as well as my first bag. Ive been using good dirt to plant it, but I wonder if I even have to because of the fertilizer that's included. It grows super fast and thick, would recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent grass seed I just prepped my yard for fall weather, I first dispatched and spread out Scott’s grass seed and then fertilized. And two weeks later I’m getting new grass. I highly recommend using Scotts grass seed for a nice green lawn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy To Use This is pretty straighforward and the bag let me know exactly what setting to put on my spreader to lay seed. The bag is quite large and I just needed to go over some empty spaces in our yard so it worked perfectly for us. The seed is already making it appearance and appears healthy thus far. It seems to have improved our ground a bit and really made a difference with growth in the bare spots. Overall, I'm happy to have used this product and with familiarity with the brand and this experience I would recommend the product to others.
