Description
Get outside and enjoy your lawn with Scotts® Turf Builder® Rapid Grass Tall Fescue Mix. With our revolutionary mix of grass seed and fertilizer in one effective formula, your lawn benefits from extended feeding, resulting in full, green grass. Compared to seed alone, this grass seed mix will grow 2X faster (when applied at the new lawn rate, subject to proper care). Scotts® Turf Builder® Rapid Grass Tall Fescue Mix grows green, lush grass in just weeks. Use on new lawns or to overseed an existing tall fescue lawn. For best results, apply in the spring or fall when air temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 80°F. We recommend using a Scotts® spreader to apply this product. Do not use weed control products until your lawn has been mowed at least 4 times. Finally, be sure to apply Scotts® Lawn Food products every 8 weeks throughout the season to help maintain your thick, green lawn. One 5.6 lb. bag of Scotts® Turf Builder® Rapid Grass Tall Fescue Mix has a new lawn coverage of 615 sq. ft. and an overseeding coverage of 1,845 sq. ft.
Step By Step Instructions
How to Use
When Seeding a New Lawn
- One 5.6 lb. bag covers 615 sq. ft. of a new lawn.
- Prep the area by raking it to loosen the top layer of soil (roughly 2" deep). Remove any dead grass or debris to ensure seed-to-soil contact.
- Apply using a Scotts® spreader - Set a Scotts® Hand-Held Spreader at 5. Go over the lawn 5x. Set a Scotts® Broadcast/Rotary Spreader to 8 1/2. Go over the lawn 2x. Set a Scotts® Drop Spreader at 17 1/2. Go over the lawn 4x. Set a Scotts® Wizz® Spreader to 7. Go over the lawn 2x. Set a Scotts® Elite Spreader to 11 1/2.
- After applying, lightly rake the product into the soil. Ensure it is covered just beneath the soil surface.
- Water daily to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 in. tall.
When Overseeding an Existing Lawn
- One 5.6 lb. bag covers 1,845 sq. ft. when overseeding an existing lawn.
- Mow the area to a height of approximately 2 in. or mow with the lowest mower setting. Rake the area you will be seeding to loosen the top layer of soil. Remove any dead grass or debris to ensure seed-to-soil contact.
- Apply using a Scotts® spreader - Set a Scotts® Hand-Held Spreader at 4. Go over the lawn 3x. Set a Scotts® Broadcast/Rotary Spreader to 7. Set a Scotts® Drop Spreader at 16 1/2. Go over the lawn 2x. Set a Scotts® Wizz® Spreader to 6. Set a Scotts® Elite Spreader to 7.
- Water daily to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 in. tall.
- You can start to mow again when the lawn reaches the desired mowing height.

Very resilient to neglect and easy to grow
I am incredibly pleased with the quality and durability of this grass seed. When I planted it, we were in a middle of a very established drought and suddenly got put under water restrictions. The grass that grew was only watered with the sparse rain we got over a month. I was going to start over and plant more for the review when my area was moved out of the restriction zone, but I was genuinely impressed by how much it grew after the complete neglect.

A Lawn Rescue in a Bag
After struggling with thin spots and large patchy areas in my lawn, I decided to give Scott’s Turf Builder Rapid Grass Tall Fescue Mix a try. I am genuinely impressed with the results.
Living in the Carolina’s means dealing with everything from intense summer heat to periods of drought, so I needed a grass seed mix that could establish quickly and hold up to challenging conditions. This mix delivered. With consistent watering, I started seeing germination much faster than expected. The new grass came in thick, healthy, and noticeably greener than some of the surrounding turf.
What stood out most was how well it filled in the bare spots and improved the overall appearance of my lawn in a relatively short time. The combo of seed and fertilizer makes the process simple and the Tall Fescue blend creates a dense, attractive turf that looks great and feels durable under foot traffic.

This product was very easy to spread and apply. The instructions were clear and concise. I applied it to our yard that we had put sod on over a year prior and had some bald spots. Scott’s mix filled in the bald spots really well.

Nice and Effective Seed
I wanted to add grass to a little hill that is mostly weeds. This grass seed is easy to use and works fast. The weather did not help make it easy though. The product worked as intended but the intense temperatures and little rainfall made planting in the late spring/early summer very difficult. I will probably retry in the fall to help boost the few sprouts that actually lasted. Overall the product is great but my timing was off.

This Scott’s turf builder rapid grass tall fescue grass seed works so good! My yard has bare spots that never seem to grow any grass and it looks awful. The results are wonderful after only one time spreading the seed. I live in the humid south for reference! I recommend!
