ScottsMiracle-Gro is a founding sponsor of the America250 Semiquincentennial celebration sponsoring the D.C. fireworks and participating in the America Gives volunteer program, all while honoring the enduring legacy of the American lawn as a symbol of community.
The U.S. will celebrate this year’s Independence Day in a big way ... ScottsMiracle-Gro will bring the fireworks! This historic celebration is made possible through efforts like our sponsorship of the Washington D.C. fireworks and partnership in the America Gives program.
This Fourth of July won’t be just a date to celebrate, though. It’ll be a moment to unite as a nation, reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans and look ahead toward the future.
This observance, officially called the Semiquincentennial, is being coordinated by America250, a nonpartisan Commission established by Congress that is chaired by former Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios. America250 hopes to reach every neighborhood and household across the country.
O.M. Scott, a Civil War veteran, founded his hardware store 92 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. He soon began offering weed-free grass seed to local farmers. In the early 1900s, he and his sons Dwight and Hubert expanded their business by selling grass seed via mail to customers, initially reaching Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia.
As our country grew, Americans moved from cities into the suburbs. The suburban home and a lawn would become symbols of the American Dream, a vision that ScottsMiracle-Gro has helped cultivate for generations. Parks and playgrounds were built across the states bringing green spaces to new places. And a green lawn became the stage for celebrations with friends, families and communities.
Today, the legacy of the lawn as a gathering place lives on.
Our associates are joining the America Gives movement through our Give Back to Gro volunteer program, which provides paid time off to support important causes. We’re focusing our efforts on gardening and green space projects in local communities. Our volunteering efforts have contributed to the 2.5 million volunteer hours (and counting) logged nationwide for America Gives.
ScottsMiracle-Gro remains committed to nurturing the green spaces that bring our communities together as we look toward the Semiquincentennial. We are proud to celebrate 250 years of American heritage and the enduring legacy of the American lawn, whether it is through the historic fireworks in our nation’s capital or the local green spaces cultivated by our associate volunteers. Join us in honoring our past and growing a vibrant future for generations to come.
