Coconut Coir

Definition

Coir (pronounced “coyer”) is an increasingly popular, natural material used in potting mixes and other products depending on the type of coir.

Coir comes from coconut husks and can be processed into coir fibers, coir chunks or coir pith. Coir pith consists of fine particles with short spongy fibers that resemble coffee grounds.

It is an excellent material in professional and consumer potting mixes as it can absorb up to 10 times its weight in water–reducing the need for watering.
