The Canadian Museum of Nature’s vision to inspire understanding and respect for nature has a lot in common with ours. Making the decision to partner with the Museum and have Scotts Canada become a sponsor of their new garden an easy one.
“Gardening is one of the many ways that Canadians connect with nature, and we are pleased to support Canada’s national museum of natural history in bringing the Landscapes of Canada Gardens to life,” says Karen Stephenson, Director, Regulatory Affairs and Stakeholder Relations.
Being part of such a significant garden in our nation’s capital just ahead of Canada’s 150th anniversary gives us the opportunity to highlight our support of gardens and green spaces to the Ottawa community, government stakeholders, and the many visitors who frequent the Museum.
On June 17 and 18, 2016, the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Ontario opened its new outdoor botanical exhibition, the Landscapes of Canada Gardens. The gardens are designed to highlight the four primary ecological zones of Canada and showcase native plant species. Park benches and a picnic area provide spots to relax and take in the gardens. The gardens also include several areas for “natural play” and a stainless steel sculpture, inspired by icebergs. The sculpture was created by sculptor and adventurer William Lishman whose story was featured in the 1996 Oscar nominated film ‘Fly Away Home’. Access to the Landscapes of Canada Gardens is free and the space is open year-round.
“Museum visitors and members of the community now have a new way to learn about some of the country’s amazing botanical diversity and to further their connection with nature.” said Meg Beckel, the museum’s President and CEO .
The garden opening was celebrated with a two day event which also coincided with Canada’s Garden Days. Garden Days is a weekend event which draws attention to Canada’s garden culture and underscores the importance of public and private gardens, the values of home gardening and the promotion of environmental stewardship.
In support of Garden Days, Scotts Canada’s Green Team was at the Museum of Nature for the official public opening of the Landscapes of Canada Gardens, providing gardening advice and free product giveaways. Frankie Flowers was also on hand offering container gardening demonstrations focusing on pollinators and vegetable gardening.
